1 Magnus Carlsen and Ju Wenjun won Norway Chess title
The prestigious Norway Chess Tournament witnessed a thrilling finale as reigning World No. 1, Magnus Carlsen etched his name in the pages of history by winning his sixth title. In a gripping final round, Carlsen outclassed the formidable Fabiano Caruana in the Armageddon match , cementing his dominance on the global stage. In the Women’s Norway Chess Tournament, reigning Women’s World Champion, Ju Wenjun emerged victorious, claiming the coveted title and a substantial prize of around $65,000. She defeated her compatriot and World Championship challenger Lei Tingjie of China in a classical game. Meanwhile, young Indian, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu displayed his remarkable talent by holding Hikaru Nakamura to an incredible classical draw. Praggnanandhaa then won the subsequent Armageddon match with a stunning performance to finish third.
2 India reached 129th position in the Global Gender Gap Index released by World Economic Forum
According to the Global Gender Gap Index released by the World Economic Forum, India has slipped two places to 129th position , while Iceland is at the top. In South Asia, India is ranked fifth after Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan , while Pakistan is at the last position . Despite this decline, India has shown strong gender parity in enrolment in secondary education and political empowerment and has ranked 10th in terms of the number of female and male heads of state in the last 50 years.
3 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology : United Nations
The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology . The 193-member UN General Assembly passed a resolution to this effect on June 7, 2024. 2024 is being celebrated as the International Year of the Camelids. (The Bactrian camel, dromedary camel, llama, alpaca, guanaco and vicuña are considered camelids or camel animals.) By designating 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the UN wants to raise public awareness about the importance of quantum science, encourage young people to study it and increase support for using it to solve current challenges.
4 BJP government formed for the first time in Odisha
Mohan Charan Majhi became the Chief Minister of Odisha on 12 June . Governor Raghuvardas administered him the oath of Chief Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present on the stage on this occasion. Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo and Prabhati Parida took oath as Deputy CM. After 24 years, Odisha again got a tribal Chief Minister. Earlier, Hemanand Biswal of Congress was the first tribal CM of the state . After Hemanand Biswal, Giridhar Gamang became the second tribal Chief Minister. BJP won the Odisha Assembly elections with a majority for the first time. Out of 147 seats in the state, BJP has got 78 seats.
5 Chandrababu Naidu took oath as Andhra Pradesh CM for the fourth time
On June 12, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo Chandrababu Naidu became the 24th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh . Governor Abdul Nazir administered the oath to the CM and ministers at Kesarpalli IT Park in Vijayawada . Janasena chief and actor Pawan Kalyan took oath as Deputy CM. The new government will have 25 members including the CM and Deputy CM. Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Amit Shah , NDA ministers and Chief Ministers of other states were present in the program. The results of the assembly elections were declared along with the Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh on June 4. NDA has won 164 out of 175 seats in the assembly. In this, Naidu’s TDP got 135, Pawan Kalyan’s Janasena got 21 and BJP got 8 seats. The list of ministers includes 8 from backward class, 3 from Scheduled Caste and 1 from Scheduled Tribe.
6 “Indian Army’s ‘D5’ Motorcycle Expedition” started to commemorate 25 years of Kargil victory
As a tribute to the valour and sacrifice of the Kargil War heroes , the Indian Army has launched an all-India motorcycle expedition to commemorate the 25th anniversary of India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. The expedition showcases the significant contributions of our brave soldiers and honours their legacy. Three teams of eight motorcycles each have embarked on this historic journey from three corners of the country – Dinjan in the East, Dwarka in the West and Dhanushkodi in the South. These cyclists will traverse varied terrains and challenging routes, symbolising the unity and resilience of our armed forces. On their way, the riders will interact with Kargil War heroes, veterans and Veer Naris living in various places coming their way. They will also pay homage at various war memorials en route, raise public awareness and also inspire youth to join the Indian Army. The teams will assemble in Delhi on June 26 and leave for Drass via two different routes.
7 India will remain the world’s fastest growing economy in the next 3 financial years: World Bank
According to the latest World Bank report, India will remain the world’s fastest growing economy with a stable growth rate of 6.7 percent in the next three financial years. This growth is driven by domestic demand, increased investment and activities related to the service sector. In the Global Economic Prospects report, the World Bank has maintained the growth forecast for India at 6.6 percent for the financial year 2024-25. Earlier, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had raised India’s growth forecast for the financial year 2024-25 from 6.5 percent to 6.8 percent.
8 Satellite ‘Trishna’ will monitor the temperature of the earth
India and France are working together on the third joint satellite mission ‘Trishna’ . The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the French space agency CNES will monitor the Earth’s surface through high-quality thermal infrared imaging satellite ‘Trishna’ . Earlier, ISRO and CNES have carried out ‘ Megha Tropiques ‘ in 2011 and ‘ SARAL Altika ‘ mission in 2013 .
9 Priyanka Jarkiholi became the youngest MP to win in the Lok Sabha
Priyanka Jarkiholi, Congress candidate and daughter of minister Satish Jarkiholi , has won from Chikkodi , defeating sitting MP and BJP leader Annasaheb Jolle . She became the youngest tribal woman to enter Parliament from an unreserved seat from Karnataka since Independence . As of June 4, 2024, the day the Lok Sabha results were announced, she was 27 years and 1 month and 18 days old.
10 SEBI awarded ‘Best Conduct of Business Regulator’ award by The Asian Banker
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has received the ‘Best Conduct of Business Regulator’ award in Asia Pacific by The Asian Banker . The award was received by Kamlesh Chandra Varshney, Whole-time Member, SEBI at a ceremony held in Hong Kong . SEBI’s notable achievements include the introduction of the T+1 settlement cycle. This phased initiative began in 2021 and was fully implemented by January 2023, significantly reducing the time it takes for investors to access their funds after trading. This change has enhanced market liquidity and efficiency.
11 Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Italy to attend the G-7 summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Italy to attend the G7 summit . India has been invited as an outreach country to the summit on Friday, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said in New Delhi . He said the visit will be an opportunity to engage with world leaders at the conference on issues important to India and the Global South. This will be India’s 11th and Mr Modi’s fifth consecutive participation in the summit . The Prime Minister will attend the outreach session. Apart from the summit, Mr Modi is likely to hold bilateral meetings with leaders of the G7 countries. Mr Modi will hold a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni . The Foreign Secretary said India will be involved at the appropriate level in the Ukraine Peace Summit to be held in Switzerland . The summit, to be held in Switzerland this month, will be attended by about 90 countries.
