2.Chetan Ghate became the new director of the Institute of Economic Development

The Institute of Economic Development has appointed Chetan Ghate as the new director in place of Ajit Mishra . He was a member of the Reserve Bank of India’s first monetary policy committee between 2016-2020, is the winner of the 2014 Mahalanobis Memorial Gold Medal for Best Research Economist in the country under 45 years of age. He is currently an external associate of the Center for Research in Macroeconomics and Macro-Finance at Swansea University (Wales, UK).

10.Karnataka government moves Supreme Court on Krishna water dispute

On February 18, 2022, the Karnataka government moved the Supreme Court , seeking constitution of a bench to hear a petition relating to a dispute over the allocation of Krishna river water . Krishna River Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telanganaflows through the states. Justice D.Y. of Maharashtra Chandrachud and Karnataka Justice A.S. Bopanna had recused itself from the matter arising out of the Water Tribunal’s decision on January 10, 2022. Karnataka had sought concession on a Supreme Court order dated November 16, 2011, which restrained the central government from publishing the final order of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal II (KWDT) in the official gazette. The order was pronounced in 2010 and the river water was allotted to Karnataka, Maharashtra and erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. The KWDT had further revised its final order and allocated surplus water to Karnataka, Maharashtra and erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, preserving the allocation of 2,130 TMC. However, after the bifurcation of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh moved the Supreme Court challenging the allocation share of KWDT.

According to the Hurun report , the number of wealthy households in India has increased by 11 percent in the year 2021 . There are 4,58,000 such dollar-millionaire families in India with a net worth of Rs 7 crore or more. Oxfam’s Inequality Kills: India Supplement 2022The report comes a month after the Hurun report, which found that since 2015, more and more of India’s wealth has gone to the top 1% of the population. According to the Hurun report, the number of wealthy households will increase by 30% to 600,000 in the next five years. With 20,300 such households, Mumbai currently leads the list of cities with the most dollar-millionaire households, followed by Delhi at 17,400 and Kolkata with 10,500 such households. According to Hurun’s Luxury Consumer Survey 2021, the number of Indian millionaires using e-wallet or UPI as their preferred payment method has doubled to 36 per cent this year.

15.Information and Broadcasting Ministry issues guidelines on data security

In its new guidelines on data protection , the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has prohibited sharing of secret documents by its officials on the Internet. They have also been told not to use digital assistant devices like Amazon’s Echo, Google Home, Apple’s HomePod in their smartphones or watches, and turn off digital assistants including Siri and Alexa. The officers have been asked to deposit their smart phones outside the meeting room while discussing confidential issues. The government issued new guidelines after they found that a large number of government officials use private messaging platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp to communicate secret information. According to the ministry, such practice violates the National Information Security Policy guidelines as well as departmental security directives.

16.Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) sets up 1000 EV charging stations across the country

On February 18, 2022, IndianOil announced that it has installed over 1,000 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) in India. With the successful deployment of over 1,000 EV charging points, IndianOil has achieved several milestones in enabling the EV revolution in India. IndianOil is going to provide EV charging facilities at 10,000 fuel stations in the next three years. IndianOil launched its first EV charger for the public in Nagpur in 2017.was established. Now, its charging points are present in 500 cities including several states and national highways. In addition, IndianOil plans to set up a base of over 3000 charging stations to convert highways into e-highways in the next three years. As per the ‘National Mission for Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage’, IndianOil is setting up EV charging infrastructure in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Kolkata and Pune. . It is followed by state capitals, smart cities, major expressways and highways.

17.RPF’s ‘Operation Nanhe Farishte’

21.Football legend Surjit Sengupta passes away

Former India footballer Surjit Sengupta , who played as a midfielder , has passed away due to COVID-19 complications. He was 71 years old. At the club level, Sengupta was associated with three major Kolkata clubs, Mohun Bagan (1972–1973, 1981–1983), East Bengal (1974– 1979) and Mohammedan Sporting (1980) . He was part of the bronze medal winning Indian national team at the 1970 Asian Games held in Bangkok, Thailand .
