1.International Day of Light :16 May

The International Day of Light is celebrated on 16 May each year.The day marks the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman.

This day is a call to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness its potential to foster peace and sustainable development.

It is a global initiative that provides a platform for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications and energy.

2.National Dengue Day: 16 May

India observes Nation Dengue Day on May 16 as suggested by the Union Health Ministry to create awareness about the disease.Measures to prevent and preparing to control the spread of dengue are among a few things that are discussed and shared on this day.

Dengue fever starts with sudden onset of fever, followed by severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rash.

Though there are no specific antiviral medicines for dengue, early clinical diagnosis by physician puts the fatality rate from this disease below 1%.

Dengue is spread by several species of female mosquitoes of the Aedes type.

3.Union Minister for Tribal Affairs launched ‘GOAL’ programme for Digital Skilling of Tribal Youth

The Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Shri Arjun Munda “GOAL (Going Online As Leaders)” programme has been launched for Digital Skilling of Tribal Youth.The Going Online As Leaders (GOAL) is a joint initiative of Facebook India with the Ministry of Tribal affairs.

The programme aims to offer mentorship to tribal youth via digital mode and intends to act as a catalyst to explore hidden talents of the tribal youth.

The program has a target to empower 5,000 tribal youths in the present phase in order to harness the full potential of digital platforms as well as tools to understand new ways of doing business, explore and connect with domestic and international markets.

4.HRD Minister e-launches seven titles on “Psycho-Social Impact of Pandemic & Lockdown and How to Cope With”

Human Resources Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank e-Launched print as well as e-editions of the set of seven titles on “Psycho-Social impact of pandemic and lockdown and how to Cope With”.It has been published under the corona studies series published by National Book Trust, NBT India.

To counter the formidable circumstances that the world is facing these days, NBT has brought out these remarkable and unparalleled set of books.

He hoped that these books serve as guides to mental well-being of people at large.

5.Landing Craft Utility Ship ‘INLCU L57’ commissioned into Indian Navy

Landing Craft Utility Ship ‘INLCU L57’ commissioned into Indian Navy in Port Blair.The indigenously designed ship have been built by Garden Reach Shipbuilder and Engineers, GRSE, Kolkata.

This is the seventh Landing Craft Utility (LCU) MK-IV class to be inducted into Indian Navy.

It is an amphibious vessel with a designated primary role of transporting and deploying main battle tanks like Arjun, T72 etc. armoured vehicles, troops and equipment from ship to shore.

The ship can also be deployed for multirole activities like search and rescue, disaster relief operation, supply and replenishment and evacuation from distant islands.

The ship is fitted with state-of-art equipment and an advanced system.

6.Sikkim celebrates statehood day

Sikkim celebrates its statehood day on 16 May.It marks the day in 1975 when Sikkim transitioned to become the 22nd state of the country from being a monarchy earlier.

The Kingdom of Sikkim was founded by the Namgyal dynasty in the 17th century.

It was ruled by a Buddhist priest-king known as the Chogyal.

It became a princely state of British India in 1890.

After 1947, Sikkim continued its protectorate status with the Republic of India.

In 1975, the monarchy was deposed by the people. A referendum in 1975 led to Sikkim joining India as its 22nd state.

7.Delhi police launches ‘Thermal Corona Combat Drone-(TCCD)’

The Delhi Police has also launched a ‘Thermal Corona Combat Drone-(TCCD)’ in collaboration with Indian Robotics Solution (IRS).The drone is fitted with a day-vision camera that can see the real image of the personnel, a disinfectant tank to sanitise an area when a suspected person is taken away for further tests, a spotlight with a night utility camera, a loudspeaker for giving instructions and a medical box to carry essentials like medicines or portable coronavirus testing kits.

It also launched ‘Thermal Corona Combat Headgear’ through which police personnel will be able to detect the temperature of a large number of people from a distance of 10-15 metres.

With the help of this equipment, live imagery can also be sent to a centralised control centre.

8.IIT-Gandhinagar develops COVID-19 dashboard to help contain community infection post lockdown

Researchers at IIT-Gandhinagar have developed an interactive COVID-19 dashboard “MIR AHD Covid-19 Dashboard”.The dashboard can help administrators, hospitals as well as the public in planning optimised testing for the novel coronavirus, and containing community infection in various post-lockdown scenarios.

The dashboard provides different epidemiological scenario-specific information at a city-scale.

It is aimed at helping various stakeholders in optimised testing efforts and post-lockdown operations to contain community infection.

9.Sahitya Akademi winner Debesh Roy passes away

Veteran Bengali author Debesh Roy died at a private hospital in Kolkata.He was conferred the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel ‘Teesta Parer Brittanto’.

He was born in Pabna in present-day Bangladesh on December 17, 1936. He had five decades of career as a writer.

Besides Teesta Parer Britanta’, he will be remembered for books like Borisaler Jogen Mondal , Manush Khun Kore Keno and Samay Asamayer Brittanto.

10.National Professor Anisuzzaman passes away in Dhaka

Noted literary personality, educationist and national Professor Anisuzzaman passed away in Dhaka.He was a reputed scholar and leading intellectual of Bangladesh who made great contributions in the field of Bangla language and literature.

Prof. Anisuzzaman was a liberation war fighter. He also participated in the language movement against Pakistan.

Born in Kolkata in 1937, his family moved to Bangladesh shortly after the independence of India in 1947.

He was awarded Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2014.
