2.Defense Ministry signs a contract with GSL for construction of 8 high speed patrol vessels

The Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with Goa Shipyard Limited- GSL for the construction of eight high speed patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard on a project costing Rs 4,733 crore . The contract was signed in New Delhi by Joint Secretary Dinesh Kumar and Chairman and Managing Director of GSL retired, Commodore B. B. Nagpal signed. These platforms will be conceived, developed and manufactured indigenously. Eight high speed ships with the capability to operate in high waters will be off India’s shores. These ships will be helpful in augmenting the security equipment on the long coasts of India.

3.UNEP report: Dhaka becomes world’s most noise polluted city

According to the recently published ‘ Annual Frontier Report, 2022 ‘ by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) , the capital of Bangladesh , Dhaka has been ranked as the most noise polluted city globally . According to the report, the city recorded the highest level of noise pollution in 2021, 119 decibels (dB). Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh stood second on the list with 114 decibels of noise pollution. Pakistan ‘s capital Islamabad ranks third, with maximum noise pollution at 105 decibels (dB). According to the report, Irbrid is the world’s quietest city at 60 dB., Lyon at 69 dB, Madrid at 69 dB, Stockholm at 70 dB and Belgrade at 70 dB. The other four most polluted cities in India on the list are Kolkata (89 dB), Asansol (89 dB), Jaipur (84 dB), and Delhi (83 dB). A total of 61 cities across the world have been ranked in the report, out of which 13 are from South Asia, while 5 of them are from India.

Indian Air Force has taken a giant leap in managing the fuel supply chain by introducing ‘ Fleet Card – Fuel on Move ‘ for its various fleet of vehicles in association with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) . This innovative initiative by the Indian Air Force brings a significant change in the logistics management of fuel. The Energy Security ‘Fleet Card’ for traveling vehicles of the Air Force was launched on 28 March 2022 by the Commanding-in-Chief Air Officer, Western Air Command, Air Marshal S Prabhakaran and IOCL Chairman, Shri S. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary in the presence of M. VaidyaWestern Air Command Headquarters, Subroto Park. Western Air Command Headquarters has been identified as the lead agency for implementation and execution of this new concept of “Fuel on Move”. The availability of the Fleet Card will allow convoys to be refueled at any IOCL fuel stations , thereby increasing their movement speed and reducing their ready time at operational locations across the country.

Recently the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has informed about the delay in giving revised administrative approval to an incomplete hydroelectric project in Maharashtra . The allocation of funds has been blocked for more than six years due to this delay. The Water Resources Department (WRD) of the Government of Maharashtra gave administrative approval for the construction of a 2×40 megawatt (MW) hydroelectric project on the left bank of the Koyna dam in the year 2004 . Koyna Dam is the biggest dam of Maharashtra , it is located in Koyana Nagar of Satara district . It is located on the state highway between Chiplun and Karad in the Western Ghats. Koyna Dam Koyna RiverThe Koyna River originates from Mahabaleshwar, a hill-station in the Sahyadri ranges. The work on the Koyna dam was started in the year 1951 and for the first time in the year 1962, the work for installing the turbine started. Presently Phase V of Koyna Hydroelectric Project is under construction. The main purpose of the dam is to supply hydroelectricity along with irrigation facilities to the neighboring areas. The Koyna, a tributary of the Krishna, originates from Mahabaleshwar in Satara district in western Maharashtra.

11.National Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey released

According to the recently released National Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey 2019-2021 , Delhi recorded the highest incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis cases across the country , with Kerala recording the lowest . After 6 decades, this survey has been done and World TB Day by Union Health Ministrywas issued to mark. The survey found that 64% of the country’s TB symptomatic population was unable to access healthcare between the period 2019 to 2021. The prevalence of TB in the country’s population above 15 years of age is 312 cases per one lakh. This is more than twice the global level which is 127 per one lakh. TB accounts for 31.7% in people 15 years of age and older. The prevalence of pulmonary TB among women is lower (154 per lakh) than that of men (472 per lakh) in the country. In India, the prevalence of microbiologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis among persons aged 15 years and above was 316 per lakh population, with the highest prevalence in Delhi at 534 per lakh and the lowest in Kerala at 115 per lakh. . The prevalence of PTB infection in this survey was 21.7 percent. For all forms of TB, Delhi had the highest prevalence in India with 747 per lakh, and in Gujarat, it was the lowest with 137. The prevalence of TB among people aged 15 years and above was 31.4 percent.

MoS of the Ministry of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh has told the Rajya Sabha that the tropical Indian Ocean is warming rapidly . It has been observed that an average increase of about 1 degree Celsius in sea surface temperature over the period 1951 to 2015which is equal to 0.15 °C per decade. Due to continuous climate change, the marine environment will have to bear the brunt. In 2021, six marine heatwaves have been observed in the Indian Ocean over a period of 52 days. Out of 6 meteorological events, the Bay of Bengal suffered four. In the western Indian Ocean region, ocean heatwave events showed an increase of 1.5 events per decade. The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) conducted a study which highlighted the dire situation. It showed that 66 oceanic heat wave events occurred in the western Indian Ocean region and 94 in the Bay of Bengal region between 1982 and 2018.

In a bid to boost exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) on March 26, 2022 exported the first consignment of this season’s fresh mangoes from Mumbai to Japan . This export of Alphonso and Kesar varieties of mango was done by M /s Berrydale Foods (OPC) Pvt Ltd , a registered exporter of APEDA to M /s Lawson Retail Chain, Japan . These mangoes were treated and packaged at the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB) facility approved by APEDA (APEDA) . Mango Festival in Tokyo, Japan as a part of Amrit Festival of Independence in association with Embassy of India and Japan & Invest Indiais being organized, in which mangoes will be displayed and tasted at various outlets of Lawson Super Markets.
