1.International Everest Day: 29th May

International Everest Day is being observed on 29th May.Nepalese Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary had climbed the Mt. Everest on this day (29th May) in 1953, as the first humans to achieve the feat.Nepal decided to observe the day as International Everest Day since 2008 when the legendary climber Hillary passed away.The day is celebrated with memorial events, processions, and special events in Kathmandu and the Everest region.

2.IMF approves 732 million emergency assistance to Bangladesh for COVID-19

The IMF Executive Board approved an emergency financial assistance worth dollar 732 million for Bangladesh to address the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.The assistance has been approved for Bangladesh to meet its urgent Balance of payment and fiscal needs as Corona pandemic has led to sharp decline in its exports and income from remittances.The assistance is provided under the Rapid Credit Facility and Rapid Financing Instrument provisions of the IMF.The money will help Bangladesh to meet its health, social protection and macro-stabilization measures.This is the largest amount of loan assistance for Bangladesh to deal with the Covid-19 fallout. Earlier ADB provided 500 million assistance to Bangladesh to deal with the Corona pandemic.

3.Meeting of BRICS Heads of Tax Authorities held

The meeting of the Heads of Tax Authorities of the BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa was held.The meeting was hosted by the Federal Tax Service of Russia, which currently holds the BRICS Presidency, to discuss the response of BRICS Tax Authorities to the COVID-19 pandemic and to explore potential areas of cooperation in tax matters.The meeting was scheduled to be held in Moscow, but was held through video conference in view of COVID-19.Finance Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey represented India at the meeting.

4.Missile Park ‘Agneeprastha’ to be set up at INS Kalinga

Foundation Stone for a Missile Park ” AGNEEPRASTHA” was laid at INS Kalinga. The Missile Park “AGNEEPRASTHA” once completed will be dedicated to all the Officers, Sailors and Support Staff of INS Kalinga, who have served in this premier op-support Base of the ENC since its establishment in 1981.The Park also commemorates the award of the prestigious Unit Citation to INS Kalinga for the year 2018-19.’AGNEEPRASTHA ‘ aims to capture glimpses of Missile History of INS Kalinga since 1981 till date. ‘AGNEEPRASTHA’ will also provide a one-stop arena for motivation and stimulation of inquisitive minds regarding the missiles and related technologies, from school children to Naval personnel and their families.

5.Finance Minister launches free instant e-PAN card facility through Aadhaar

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman formally launched the facility for instant allotment of PAN on a near to real time basis.This facility is now available for those PAN applicants who possess a valid Aadhaar number and have a mobile number registered with Aadhaar.The allotment process is paperless and an electronic PAN, e-PAN is issued to the applicants free of cost.The beta version of the facility of instant PAN through Aadhaar based e-KYC  was started on 12th of Feb on the e-filing website of Income Tax Department.A total of 50.52 crore PANs have been allotted to the taxpayers, out of which, around 49.39 crore are allotted to the individuals and more than 32.17 crore are seeded with Aadhaar so far.The instant PAN applicants are required to access the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department to provide their valid Aadhaar number and then submit the OTP received on their Aadhaar registered mobile number.On successful completion of this process, a 15-digit acknowledgment number is generated. If required, the applicant can check the status of the request anytime by providing a valid Aadhaar number and on successful allotment, can download the e-PAN.

6.Centre approves Rs. 445 cr for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Chhattisgarh

Centre has approved 445 crore rupees for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Chhattisgarh during 2020-21.The aim of the mission is to provide adequate potable drinking water of prescribed quality on regular and long-term basis to every rural household of the country by 2024.A budget of 3 lakh 60 thousand Crore rupees has been allocated for this scheme.Chhattisgarh has planned to have 100 Percent Functional Tap Water Connection by 2023-24.Chhattisgarh has been battling with the issue of rapid groundwater depletion and chemical contamination of Arsenic, Fluoride and Iron in water since many years.

7.MP Govt creates ‘Rojgar Setu Yojana’ to employ migrant workers

The Madhya Pradesh Government has created ‘Rojgar Setu Yojana’ to employ migrant workers, who have come back to the State from other states amid coronavirus-induced lockdown.The State Government is preparing details after surveying skilled labourers.With the help of this description, they will be provided employment in small, cottage industries or factories.The Swamitva Scheme is now being implemented in the state too.Under this scheme, the survey of the entire rural population will be done, then the records will be prepared and people will be given ownership rights over their lands.The Swamitva Scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Panchayati Raj Day 2020.The Scheme will ensure the demarcation of inhabited land in rural areas with the use of the latest surveying methods including the drones.

8.Uttarakhand govt starts “Mukhyamantri Swarozgar Yojana” for returnee migrants

To retain the migrants who have returned to the state during the lockdown, Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat inaugurated the Mukhyamantri Swarozgar Yojana.It is self-employment opportunities to youth and a boost to reverse migration, especially entrepreneurs returning to Uttarakhand and encouraging skilled and unskilled artisans, handicrafts and unemployed youths to start their own business.The migrants who apply under this programme will get quick approval from the authorities concerned and their applications will be forwarded to banks with immediate subsidy which will be 25% in the hill districts and 15% in the plain districts.The scheme will offer credit facility through nationalised banks, scheduled commercial banks and cooperative banks.Under the Yojana, the margin money will be provided as a grant by the MSME department.

9.Sandip Pradhan’s tenure as SAI Director General extended by two years

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has extended the tenure of Sandip Pradhan as Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) by two years.The extended tenure will come into effect from 6 June 2020.The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for extension.

10.Indian long-distance runner Kiranjeet Kaur handed four-year ban after being tested positive for doping

Long-distance runner Kiranjeet Kaur, who won the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K among the Indians last year, has been handed a four-year ban by World Athletics’ anti-doping body for returning positive for a banned substance in a test conducted in Doha.The National Dope Testing Laboratory has been under suspension from the World Anti-Doping Agency and so Kaur’s samples were tested in the WADA accredited laboratory in Doha.The 32-year-old Kaur will be stripped of the top prize she won at the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K.Her ban period has begun from 15 December, the date of in-competition sample collection.

11.Veteran lyricist Yogesh passes away

Veteran lyricist Yogesh Gaur, known for his famous songs like ‘Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye’ and ‘Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli’ in ‘Anand’, passed away.Known by his first name in film circles, Yogesh was a prominent lyricist in ’70s Hindi cinema and gave some of his best songs in the middle-of-the-road films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee.Some of his evergreen hits are ‘Badi Sooni Sooni Hai’, ‘Maine Kaha Phoolon Se’ from Mukherjee’s ‘Mili’; ‘Rajinigandha Phool Tumhare’, ‘Kai Baar Yunhi Dekha Hai’ from from ‘Rajinigandha’ and ‘Na Jaane Kyon Hota Hia Yeh Zindagi Ke Saath’ and  ‘Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan’ from ‘Chhoti Si Baat’.

12.Rajya Sabha member and Mathrubhumi chief M P Veerendra Kumar passes away

Rajya Sabha MP Veerendra Kumar passed away at the age of 84 in Kozhikode due to cardiac arrest.Kumar was the Managing Director of the leading Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi.He was born to Marudevi Avva and Padmaprabha Gowder, a leader of Socialist Party on July 22, 1936, in Kalpetta. He was also arrested during the Emergency.In 1996, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kozhikode constituency and served as Minister of State (MoS) for Labour and later Finance.
