Prime Minister  Shri Narendra Modi  participated in the programs organized on the occasion of ‘ Navy Day 2023 ‘ celebrations  in Sindhudurg . He   also witnessed ‘tactical demonstrations’ by Indian Naval ships, submarines, aircraft and special forces from Tarkarli beach, Sindhudurg . Shri Modi   inspected the guard of honour . The Prime Minister announced that now  the epaulettes  of  Indian Naval officers  will have  the  insignia of Shivaji Maharaj’s army . The Prime Minister said that soon the ranks of the Navy will be given new names in accordance with Indian culture and tradition. He   congratulated the Navy for appointing the country’s first woman commanding officer on a naval ship . Earlier, the Prime Minister  unveiled a huge statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj  at  Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg district  . He also inaugurated a painting exhibition on Shivaji Maharaj.  Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4 December . The ‘Navy Day 2023’ celebrations at Sindhudurg pay tribute to the rich maritime heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose seal inspired the new naval ensign that was adopted last year when the Prime Minister commissioned the first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

Kenyan  President  William Samoa Ruto   arrived in New Delhi on a three-day visit to India . A high level delegation has also come with him.  This is President Ruto’s  first visit to India . President Ruto   will hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi .  He will meet President  Draupadi Murmu . The Kenyan President   will also participate in  a  trade and investment event in New Delhi . This is the visit of a President from Kenya to India after a period of more than six years. This visit will strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

3 Zoram People’s Movement ready to form government after winning assembly elections in Mizoram

Zoram People’s Movement-ZPM  has secured absolute majority in  Mizoram Assembly elections  .  It has got  27 seats  in  the forty member assembly . The ruling  Mizo National Front  has   won  10 seats . Bharatiya Janata Party  has won two seats. Congress won one seatOutgoing Chief Minister Zoramthanga has lost the election  . ZPM’s Lalthan Sanga defeated him in Aizawl East-One seat by more than 2100 votes. Health Minister R Lalthangliana has also lost the election. ZPM’s Chief Ministerial candidate Lalduhoma has already won the Serchhapi seat. The majority figure in the 40-seat Mizoram Assembly is 21. Voting was held in Mizoram on November 7 and more than 80 percent voting was recorded.

4 Commander P Deosthali becomes the first woman to command an Indian Naval warship

Commander Prerna Devasthali  has   been appointed as the first woman officer to command a warship in the Indian Navy . Commander Devasthali will command the warship of the Western Fleet of the Indian Navy. Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar has given information about the appointment of Commander Devasthali on Twitter on 1 December 2023. Lieutenant Commander Prerna, the first woman observer on the Tupolev Tu-142, has also served on the ‘P8I’, a maritime reconnaissance aircraft. Prerna Devasthali was also appointed Commanding Officer of ‘INS Trinket’ based in Goa.

5 new international air routes for North-East India

Recently, the Centre’s ‘ Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik ‘ (UDAN) initiative   has approved four new air routes connecting the North-Eastern states to international destinations . These routes   will connect Assam with Thailand and BangladeshManipur with Myanmar  and  Tripura with Bangladesh . Concessional airfares will be offered on these routes under the UDAN scheme, which is an important step in enhancing regional air connectivity. The UDAN scheme involves state subsidies for airfares, with the Airports Authority of India managing the bidding process, airline selection and subsequent subsidy allocation, with states providing viability gap funds to the lowest bidder. ‘International UDAN’, launched in the year 2022, aims to promote socio-economic progress by increasing air connectivity from specific states to international destinations.

6 Bihar launches ‘Mission Daksh’ to help 25 lakh educationally weak students

The Bihar government  launched  a new initiative aimed at supporting around 25 lakh children   facing significant academic challenges in  state-run schools . Mission Daksh ” ( Dynamic Approach to Knowledge and Skills ), this initiative  focuses on providing specialized Hindi, Mathematics and English classes  to  students of classes 3-8 across the state  . Each teacher will guide only five students, especially those who are struggling with fluency in Hindi and English and facing challenges in basic mathematics. Children of class 1st and 2nd will have recess at 3.30 pm. After this, from 3:30 to 5 pm, each teacher will teach five weak children in additional time. In this, apart from teachers of secondary and higher secondary schools and trainees of educational training institutes, Tola Sevaks have also been deployed.

7 Deeptech Startup Promotion Campaign named Samriddhi Conclave inaugurated at IIT Ropar

Governor of Punjab  and   Administrator of  Chandigarh , Shri Banwarilal Purohit  inaugurated   the DeepTech Startup Incentive Program  dedicated to promoting  innovation in agriculture and water technology , called  Samridhi  (Strategic Acceleration for Market, Research, Innovation & Development: ICPS Startup A holistic initiative for. It is  hosted by IHub AWADH, a technology and innovation center set up under the National Mission on  Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) . Five strategic collaborations have been formalized at the Samriddhi Conclave and include five deep-tech innovations. A total of 13 startups have been selected under rigorous evaluation and presented their ideas. 25 startups displayed their solutions at the exhibition. Over 30 experts discussed market research, innovation and strategic incentives for growth.

10 Oxford University Press declares ‘ridge’ as word of the year

Oxford University Press (OUP) on Monday  announced  the colloquial word ‘ ridge ‘ as  the word of the year 2023 . The term   refers to style, beauty, attractiveness, or the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner. The word was chosen from a shortlist of eight words prepared by OUP experts. Etymologically, the word is believed to be a short form of the word ‘ charisma ‘, which is derived from the middle part of the word, which is an unusual word formation convention. The publisher said in a statement that the word ‘Ridge’, chosen by language experts at the university, is an interesting example of how language can be created, shaped and influenced by communities before it becomes widely used. 11 First Survey Ship (Large) Sandhyak handed over to Indian Navy

Sandhyak (Yard 3025)  , the first of  four Survey Vessels (Large)  being built at  Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata , was delivered to the Indian Navy on 04 December 2023. The contract for four survey vessels (large) was signed on 30 October 2018. The SVL vessels are designed and built by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata as per Indian Register of Shipping Classification Society norms. The primary role of the ship will be to conduct complete coastal and deep-water hydrographic survey of port/harbour approaches and determination of navigation channels/routes.

12 INS Sumedha – Deployed at Mission Antsiranana, Madagascar

Indian Naval  Ship  Sumedha  is making port call at Antsiranana, Madagascar  , as a part of Indian Navy’s long range mission based deployment from 04 to 06 December 2023. The objective of the visit is to enhance Indian Navy’s commitment to strengthen maritime security and bilateral cooperation with Madagascar. India and Madagascar have traditionally enjoyed warm and friendly relations and both countries share the principles of democracy, secularism and a common ethos of development. This deployment also reflects India’s warm and cordial relations with East African countries.

13 India achieves target of 12 per cent ethanol blending in petrol during ethanol supply year in October 2023

India has   achieved the target of 12 per cent ethanol blending in petrol during the ethanol supply year of  October 2023  . Responding to supplementary questions during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Petroleum Minister  Hardeep Singh Puri  said  the 10 per cent target of blending  had been achieved five months before November, 2022. He also said that the total oil and natural gas mining area in the country has increased to 5 lakh square kilometers. He said that the government is working on reducing the import of petroleum. India is still importing 85 percent oil and 50.5 percent natural gas.

14 On the first day of the winter session, Parliament passed the Advocates (Amendment) Bill. Rajya Sabha approves Post Office Bill

Parliament  has passed  the Advocates (Amendment) Bill 2023 . Lok Sabha approved it. This bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha in the rainy session itself. This bill   amends the Advocates Act 1961 . It  repeals certain sections under  the Legal Practitioners Act 1879  relating to agents or brokers  . It provides that  the District Judge, Sessions Judge, District Magistrate and Revenue Officer not below the rank of District Collector in every High Court may prepare or issue a list of brokers . Broker means a person who buys or offers to buy the services of a legal practitioner in any legal matter for money. Now once the passed bill becomes law, the court or judge can expel any person included in the broker list from the court premises. Despite the name appearing in the broker list, the broker can face imprisonment of up to three months or a fine of Rs 500 or both together. The objective of this bill is to keep the court premises free from brokers. Rajya Sabha passed ‘ Post Office Bill 2023 ‘ after detailed discussion . This Bill   will replace the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 . According to the provisions of the Bill  , the government  can stop any material sent by post for examination for special reasons including security.

15 Telangana government gives additional charge to Anti-Corruption Bureau Director General Ravi Gupta as the new Director General of Police of the state

The Telangana government  has  given additional charge  to  Anti-Corruption Bureau  Director General  Ravi Gupta  as the state’s new Director General of Police and chief of the police force. This arrangement has come into effect with immediate effect. On the instructions of the Election Commission, the state government had suspended Anjani Kumar and two Additional Directors General of Police Sanjay Jain and Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat for violation of the model code of conduct of the elections.

16 RBI nod to SBI MF to buy 9.99% stake in Karur Vysya Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has  approved   SBI Mutual Fund (SBI MF)  to acquire  9.99% of the paid-up share capital or voting rights of  Karur Vysya Bank Limited (KVB)  . The move signals a possible strategic investment by SBI MF in the private sector leader. However, there are certain conditions attached to this approval, including time constraints and limitations on total holdings.

18 11th Bangladesh Book Fair begins at College Square, Kolkata

The 11th Bangladesh Book Fair   has started at College Square, Kolkata . This year 65 publishers are participating in this festival of books. Andaleeb Ilyas,  Deputy High Commissioner of  Bangladesh High Commission  , said that this book fair will help the publishers to reach out to those interested in Bangladeshi literature, as many publishers   do not get the opportunity to participate in the Kolkata International Book Fair . This book fair will run till 13th December.

20 Indian Navy Day 2023

 India celebrates  Navy Day on 4 December  every year to honor Operation Trident, a significant offensive maneuver during the   India-Pakistan war   of 1971 . 21 President pays tribute to the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad on his birth anniversary

Recently  the President  has  paid tribute to  the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad on his birth anniversary. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was born   on December 3, 1884  in Jiradei , Siwan district  of   Bihar . He   was associated with Mahatma Gandhi  during  the Champaran Satyagraha (1917)  in  Bihar . Dr. Prasad   reacted strongly to the Rowlatt Act of 1918 and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 . Dr. Prasad   called for non-cooperation in Bihar under Gandhiji’s non-cooperation movement . He  played an important role in the Salt Satyagraha in Bihar in 1930  , due to which he was also imprisoned. He officially  joined  the Indian National Congress  in the year 1911  during its annual session held in  Calcutta. In the year 1946,  he   joined  the interim government of  Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as the Minister of Food and Agriculture and gave the slogan “ Grow more food ”. He   served as  the first President of India from January 26, 1950  (when the country adopted its Constitution)  to May 13, 1962, and  holds the record for the longest serving President .

Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve as a justice  on  the U.S. Supreme Court,   died in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 93. His groundbreaking career and influential decisions have left a lasting legacy in American jurisprudence. As a female lawyer in a male-dominated profession in the mid-20th century, O’Connor faced significant challenges. President  Ronald Reagan  appointed Sandra Day O’Connor to the U.S. Supreme Court  in 1981  . She became the first woman to serve as a judge in the country’s highest court.
