1 African Union was included as a permanent member of G-20 on India’s proposal.

 At the start of  the 18th G-20 summit  in  New Delhi , the African Union  became a permanent member of the organization. At the inaugural session, Prime Minister  Narendra Modi invited  African Union chief  Ajali Asomani  to take a seat as a permanent member. India  had proposed to make the African Union a permanent member of the G-20 in the spirit of  Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas  . In his address at the first session organized in the name of One Earth  , Shri Modi said that Sabka Saath is a symbol of inclusive spirit within and outside the country. On the first day of the summit,  two sessions were held with the theme  –  One Earth and One Family., Let us tell you that G20 is an intergovernmental forum, which includes 19 countries and the European Union. PM Modi had written a letter 3 months before the summit to make the 55-nation African Union a permanent member of the G20.

2 G-20 leaders accepted the New Delhi Declaration

3 Global Biofuel Alliance launched at  conference

India   launches Global Biofuels Alliance  at  the G-20 Summit  in  New Delhi . 4 Announcement of India-West Asia-Europe Mega Economic Corridor

 An ambitious project was announced today at the  G20 summit . This trade related  project  will connect India to Europe through West Asia . The India-West Asia-Europe Connectivity Corridor, announced under the Global Framework and Investment Partnership Forum in the presence of world leaders,   is the first project of its kind. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this project will make India a medium for economic integration between West Asia and Europe. Describing the corridor as a major agreement, US President Joe Biden said that his country will invest with its partners in economic corridors that will bring significant changes in investment. French President Emmanuel Macron also called it an important project. Countries involved in this project America, India, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy and European Union are  included.

5 India to invite Quad leaders on upcoming Republic Day

6 Government sets up new Central Empowered Committee to assist in forest and environment related matters

The government has   constituted a new Central Empowered Committee to assist the Supreme Court on  forest and environment related issues  . Earlier this work was being done by an ad-hoc committee. The Supreme Court had constituted a Central Empowered Committee in 2002 to monitor compliance with environmental protection and related laws. The new committee   has been constituted immediately after the passage of the Environment Protection Amendment Bill 2023 . The members of the new Central Empowered Committee will be nominated and appointed by the Central Government. The committee will have  a chairman, a member secretary and three experts  .

7 RBI will phase out excess cash after withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes and close the incremental cash reserve ratio.

Reserve Bank of India  increased  the incremental cash reserve ratio-ICRR  after withdrawal of  Rs 2000 notes. Have decided to end it. RBI had implemented this ratio to resolve the excess of cash in the market. This work will be done in a phased manner from today. On August 10, RBI had asked banks to maintain incremental cash reserve ratio at the rate of 10 per cent on their total demand and total liabilities between May 19, 2023 and July 28, 2023. This step was taken to absorb the increase in cash availability due to withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes and other reasons. RBI said in a statement that after assessing the current liquidity conditions, it was decided that the amount accumulated under the incremental cash ratio will be released in three phases. Incremental cash reserve ratio (I-CRR) is an additional cash balance that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) can ask banks to maintain above the cash reserve ratio (CRR) for a specific period. CRR is the minimum amount of total deposits which

8 Britain rejoins EU’s Horizon Science Research Program

United Kingdom  joins  European  Union  Horizon Science Research Programme. Have decided to rejoin. 10 White Sambar in Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary

Leucistic sambar  has been spotted  for the first time in  the Sangama range  of  the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary . white sambar deer was  earlier   spotted in  the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in 2014. Leucism is a condition in which an animal’s skin pigmentation disappears, leaving the skin white or pale., This condition may occur naturally at birth due to a phenotype (a characteristic of any living being) that may be caused by a defect in the animal’s development. This is different from albinism and is a condition caused by a lack of melatonin in the animal’s skin and due to albinism the animal’s eyes will be pink or red. In leucism the animal lacks pink eyes. Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1987 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1973 with the objective of protecting, propagating or developing wildlife and its environment. It includes the reserved forests of Mandya, Ramanagara and Chamarajanagar districts of Karnataka state.

12 Bengaluru sets up India’s first 500 kVA underground power transformer station at Malleshwaram

India’s first underground power transformer  has been installed  in  Bengaluru , marking a significant step towards modernizing the city’s power distribution infrastructure. This historic achievement reflects Bengaluru’s commitment to the safety, reliability and aesthetic enhancement of its urban landscape. Located at 15th Avenue, Malleshwaram, the Underground Transformer Center is a collaborative effort between Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). With a budget of Rs 1.98 crore, this pioneering project has a transformer of 500 KVA capacity. Historically, underground power transformer stations have been found primarily in Western countries, where governments prioritize public convenience and safety.

13 Bengal Day will be celebrated on  ‘Poila Baisakh’

The West Bengal  Assembly   officially declared  15 April as the Bengali New Year Day , also known as  Poila Baisakh. An important decision was taken by passing a resolution to celebrate the day as the foundation day of the state. The decision comes amid controversy and disagreement over the date chosen for the festival. The motion, moved under Rule 169, proposes to celebrate Poila Baisakh as ‘Bangla Day’ and commemorate Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s masterpiece, ‘Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol’ (Soil of Bengal, Water of Bengal). Demands to declare it as the official state song. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has 62 MLAs in the West Bengal Assembly, strongly opposed the proposal. He argues that the foundation day of the state should be celebrated on June 20, a date of historical importance. On that day in 1947, West Bengal MLAs voted for the partition of Bengal, an event celebrated by some as Bengal Day.

The 78th session  of  the United Nations General Assembly was  inaugurated   by Dennis Francis,  diplomat of  Trinidad and Tobago . The theme of the session is “ Rebuilding trust and rekindling global solidarity: accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and stability for all” . Dennis Francis has been elected President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will run for one year, starting in September 2023.

17 CID arrests former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in Skill Development Corporation scam

 Former Chief Minister of  Andhra Pradesh Chandrababu Naidu  was   arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department- CID in Nandyal. This arrest   has been made in connection with the Skill Development Corporation scam . Mr Naidu is accused of rigging contracts, misusing public funds and promoting a fake scheme in the name of Skill Development Corporation. Shri Naidu has been arrested in connection with the scam in the project costing Rs 3,356 crore. 10 percent of the amount of this project was to be given by the government and 90 percent amount was to be given by the German company Siemens. But Siemens had said in its statement to the magistrate that it was not involved in the joint venture or the MoU issued by the government.
