1. Kerala announces extension of ‘Kval Plus program’ to five more districts of the state
Recently, the Department of Women and Child Development , Government of Kerala has announced to extend the ‘ Kaval Plus ‘ program to five other districts of the state . This ambitious program was initially launched as a pilot project to provide care and protection to children and to provide holistic support to children suffering from sexual abuse. Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad in December 2020Since its launch in the districts, the project has been able to reach out to around 300 and 150 children respectively. Now this project will also be implemented in Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur. This project will be implemented with the help of NGOs capable of working with children. The selection of NGOs in all the districts is done by a committee constituted at the district level, which includes District Child Protection Officer, Child Welfare Committee representatives and Protection Officers (Non-Institutional Care) etc. Based on individual assessment of eligible children, the NGO will prepare an individual care plan for each child. After this, holistic psycho-social, economic and educational support is provided to the children.
