1.Vesak Day: 7 May 2020

Vesak, also known as Buddha Jayanti commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Buddhahood), and death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha.This year Vesak day falls on 7th may in India.

It was on this day that Gautam Buddha was born in 623 BC. It is believed that this was also the day he attained enlightenment.

Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha at Lumbini near Kapilavastu (in present Nepal) in 566 BC.

He gave his first sermon at Sarnath near Varanasi.

2.Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s 159th birth anniversary

Every year May 7 is celebrated as Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti.He started writing poetry at the age of 8 and published his first collection at the age of 16.

His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India’s Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh’s Amar Shonar Bangla.

The Sri Lankan national anthem was inspired by his work.

He became in 1913 the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

3.Cuckoos of Mongolia travel 5,000 km to enjoy environment of Madhya Pradesh

The cuckoos of Mongolia are currently enjoying the environment of Madhya Pradesh.For this they have been travelled thousands of km to arrive in the state.

The cuckoos are now in a mood to stay in Madhya Pradesh after flying 5,000 km in only 5 days from African country Kenya.

Under the Mongolia Cuckoo Project, transmitters have been fitted to five cuckoos at the Khorkh Bird Banding Center in northern Mongolia to study their migration routes and their habitat during winter.

4.Indian Navy Ship INS Jalashwa reaches Male for evacuation of Indian Nationals

Indian Navy Ship INS Jalashwa has reached Male for evacuation of Indian Nationals as part of Samudra Setu program.The ship will leave for Kochi carrying around 700 indians.

Indian high commission in Male is coordinating final arrangements for emigration and local transport.

Priority will be given to those who need emergency medical care, have lost jobs or are stranded tourists.

5.Government begins evacuation exercise ‘Vande Bharat Mission’

In one of the largest evacuation exercises named the Vande Bharat Mission, the government will operate 64 flights till May 13 to bring home nearly 14,800 Indian nationals stranded abroad due to the coronavirus lockdown.The preparations for the operation have commenced and also urged the stranded individuals to stay in touch with the Indian embassies in their countries.

The 64 flights will include 10 flights from the UAE, 2 from Qatar, 5 from Saudi Arabia, 7 from the UK, 5 from Singapore, 7 from the United States, 5 from the Philippines, 7 from Bangladesh, 2 from Bahrain, 7 from Malaysia, 5 from Kuwait and 2 flights from Oman.

Maximum number of flights in the first week of repatriation will bring back citizens from the Gulf countries.

6.IIT- Kanpur joins hands with Bharat Dynamics Ltd for development of affordable ventilators for Covid-19 treatment

In Uttar Pradesh, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has joined hands with Bharat Dynamics Limited for the development of affordable ventilators for Covid-19 treatment.A startup of IIT Kanpur designed and developed a high-end and affordable, indigenous ventilator necessary for providing life support to critically ill COVID-19 patients under the overall supervision of IIT Kanpur team led by Prof Amitabha Bandyopadhyay.

Apart from providing support to the critical patient, the ventilator’s design also has unique features to safeguard the frontline healthcare workers from exposure to the virus.

7.Private schools in Mizoram to reduce fees by 50% during lockdown period

In Mizoram, all private schools have decided to reduce the school fees from the students by 50% during the lockdown period.This is also resolved that those schools, which have already taken full monthly fees from the students for April, will not charge fees for the month of May.

This was decided jointly by the education department officials and representatives from student bodies and Independent School Association at a meeting chaired by the state education Minister Lalchhandama Ralte.

8.Tripura CM launches online portal scholarships.gov.in

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has launched an online portal scholarships.gov.in under ‘Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana’.Under the Yojana, the state government will provide Rs. 5,000 to 14,608 youths who are in final year in colleges or Universities as a grant for Smartphones.

He hoped that the students will be benefited by the scheme and students will use the smartphones in positive ways.

9.Tamil Nadu govt to turn Jayalalithaa’s iconic residence into a memorial

The Tamil Nadu government has formally commenced the process of acquiring the sprawling three-storeyed residence of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, ‘Veda Nilayam’ here, to convert it into a memorial.A Rs 50 crore phoenix-themed memorial was already coming up for the late AIADMK general secretary at the Marina, where she was laid to rest following her demise on December 5, 2016.

Fondly addressed as ‘Amma’, meaning mother in Tamil, by her supporters, Jayalalithaa died in December 2016 after receiving treatment at the Apollo Hospitals for 75 days.

Jayalalithaa lived in ‘Veda Nilayam’ for over 30 years till her final days.

10.Iraqi Parliament confirms Mustafa Al Kadhimi as new Prime Minister

Former intelligence chief Mustafa al-Kadhimi has been approved as Iraq’s new prime minister.Former PM Adil-Abdul Mahdi resigned in late November following widespread anti-government protests that spread across Iraq’s central and southern provinces.

The Iraqi parliament approved Kadhimi’s government at an emergency session.

Serving as the head of Iraq’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) from 2016, Kadhimi had revised his proposed cabinet several times in recent weeks to appeal to various political factions in Baghdad.

11.DPS Negi takes over as Director General Labour Bureau

Indian Economic Services officer D P S Negi took charge as Director General of Labour Bureau in the Ministry of Labour and Employment.The Labour Bureau collects and analyses data related to workers, employment, and retail inflation.

Besides Negi also assumed charge as Senior Labour & Employment Advisor of the ministry.

Negi is an Indian Economic Services (IES) officer of the 1985 batch.

12.“Vijyant at Kargil: The Life of a Kargil Hero”: biography of Captain Vijyant Thapar

Penguin Random House will publish the e-book titled as “Vijyant at Kargil: The Life of a Kargil Hero”.The book is“first-ever” biography giving a rare insight into the heart and mind of one of India’s bravest soldiers. 

The book has been penned by Vijyant’s father Colonel VN Thapar and writer Neha Dwivedi, a martyr’s daughter herself.

Captain Vijyant Thapar was only 22 when he was martyred in the Kargil war in 1999.
