1.International Day to End Obstetric Fistula: 23 May

Every year May 23 is observed as International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.The observance holds immense importance because the need to end obstetric fistula is extremely urgent.

It is a health burden that is not given much attention, however, it as per the UN it is “one of the most serious and tragic injuries that can occur during childbirth.

As per WHO, obstetric fistula is a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum caused by prolonged, obstructed labour without treatment.

2020 theme: “End gender inequality! End health inequities! End Fistula now!”.

2.2nd consignment of essential medicine supplies from India reach Port Louis, Mauritius

Second consignment of essential medicine supplies from India reached Port Louis aboard INS Kesari.The shipment also includes around 10 tonnes of Ayurvedic medicines.

An Indian Medical Assistance Team has also reached on board INS Kesari to work with the Mauritius Health authorities through mutual sharing of experience and expertise.

The supply of these medicines and the medical team has been arranged by India at the request of Mauritius.

The shipment underscores the unique ties between India and Mauritius and longstanding partnership in the public health care sector.

3.Hunar Haat to restart from September this year: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi

The Hunar Haat will restart from September this year with the theme of “Local to Global” and comparatively larger participation of artisans.It will be organised after a gap of about five months.

Due to CoronaVirus pandemic and lockdown the event is not being organised now.

Hunar Haat has become an Empowerment Exchange of artisans and craftsmen from across the country and it has provided employment and employment opportunities to more than 5 lakh Indian artisans, craftsmen, culinary experts and other people associated with them in the last 5 years.

Social distancing, hygiene, sanitisation and use of masks will be ensured at Hunar Haat.

In the coming days, Hunar Haat will be organized in many cities including Delhi, Prayagraj, Bhopal, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and other places.

4.Scientists claim chemicals in Kangra tea could lower coronavirus activity better than HIV drugs

After the well known herb Ashwgandha, now, Kangra tea has been marked as a potential coronavirus blocker.A senior research professional associated with a reputed bioresource technology institute has claimed that Kangra Tea, well known for its other medicinal properties, may also be able to boost immunity against coronavirus by blocking the virus activity better than the anti-HIV drugs.

The endorsement of Kangra tea as a potential virus killer or fighter comes days after a group of researchers of IIT-Delhi revealed that herb Ashwagandha contains certain bio-actives that interact with SARS-CoV-2 virus in a way that prevents it from multiplying.

According to experts, Ashwagandha, which is also popular as an aphrodisiac, has a natural compound called withanone (Wi-N), with the potential to block Covid-19’s enzyme responsible for replication.

5.India’s KHUDOL declared one of Top 10 Global Initiatives to fight COVID-19

The United Nations listed the KHUDOL initiative of Manipur as one of the top 10 global initiatives to fight against COVID-19.KHUDOL is an initiative of a NGO called Ya_All.

Under the initiative, the NGO provides food, hygiene and health of LGBTQ community, daily wage workers, people with AIDS.

Through the volunteers the organization distributed 1000 health kits, 1500 condoms and 6500 sanitary pads.

6.Naxal-affected Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh secures 1st position in providing employment under MNREGA

In Madhya Pradesh, Naxal-affected Balaghat district has secured the first position in the state in terms of providing employment to rural job card holders under MNREGA.One lakh 23 thousand 64 laborers are getting employment. In the current financial year 2020-21, an amount of Rs 20 crore has been spent on wages for MGNREGA works in this district.

A total of 5,246 works are in progress in 684 gram panchayats in Balaghat district.

Due to this one lakh 23 thousand 64 laborers of the district have got employment.

7.Ladakh Police comes into existence, LG approves new insignia of Police

In a historic development after the formation of Union Territory of Ladakh, separate Ladakh Police has come into being.Police in Leh and Kargil districts now will be called Ladakh police.

The newly formed Ladakh Police after separating from Jammu and Kashmir will have its new symbols, insignia, formation sign and flag with a separate identity.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur has approved the new insignia of Ladakh Police.

The Logo has Ashoka with Satyameva Jayate, LP in symmetric design and Juniper leaves (incense offered on religious occasions) covering the Ashoka and LP. 

Flap pattern starts with the name of Ladakh as common practice with police forces across the country.

The red and blue colored Ladakh police flag with ‘Khidmat aur Himmat’ reads service and courage is ready to fly high.

8.UP administration start farmer awareness campaign to protect crops from locust or grasshopper

In Uttar Pradesh, the administration and agriculture department have started farmer awareness campaigns to protect the crops from locust or grasshopper pests in the state.In view of the pest outbreak in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan, administration has issued instructions to conduct awareness campaigns among farmers to protect the crops in the state.

Farmers have been advised to remain vigilant and take adequate precautions to thwart the possible attack of the grasshopper insect.

The District Magistrate of Lucknow has appealed to the farmers to clean the grass on the boundary of fields and plough their fields to protect it from Grasshoppers.

In the event of their widespread outbreak, drum, plate etc. should be played so that they run away with fear.

Farmers have been advised to inform local administration to inform about any attack of locust and take help of fire department also to deal with the problem.

9.Despite COVID-19, Meghalaya prepares for National Games 2022

Meghalaya is continuing its efforts in preparing for the 39th edition of the National Games in 2022 despite the prevailing health scenario caused by COVID-19.The Union Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment has sanctioned Rs 200 crore for construction of adisabled-friendly stadium for hosting of the National Games 2022.

A significant progress has been made in infrastructure planning and team preparation.

The 39th Edition of the National Games is slated to be held in the year 2022 in the State of Meghalaya.

Recently, doubts have been raised on the conduct of the 36th National Games to be hosted by Goa even as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has finalised October 20, next as the start date for the Goa National Games.

10.Ready actor Mohit Baghel passes away

Actor Mohit Baghel, best known for playing Amar Chaudhary in superstar Salman Khan’s Ready, has died of cancer.He was 26.

He began his career with the comedy show “Chote Miyaan”. The actor has also appeared in Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra starrer “Jabariya Jodi”.

11.Jitendra Nath Pande, famed ex-AIIMS doctor, dies of Covid-19

Dr Jitendra Nath Pande, eminent pulmonologist and former head of the department of medicine at AIIMS Delhi, who had tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this week, died.Dr Pande and his wife tested positive with mild symptoms and decided to remain in home isolation.

Pande, who had authored hundreds of papers on respiratory medicine, had treated various famous personalities, including the President of India.

After retirement from AIIMS, he was practising at Sitaram Bhartia Research Institute.
