1 Retired Indian Administrative Service officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will be the new Election Commissioners.

Retired Indian Administrative Service  officers  Gyanesh Kumar  and  Sukhbir Singh Sandhu  have been appointed as  the new  Election Commissioners . The Ministry of Law and Justice has issued a notification in this regard.  The posts of both the Election Commissioners were vacant after  the retirement of  Anup Chandra Pandey and resignation of Arun Goyal .

2 Food Safety and Standards Authority of India-FSSAI has certified 100 prisons across the country as Eat Right Campuses.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)  has  certified around 100 prisons across the country  as ‘Eat Right Campus’. This is a significant achievement of FSSAI in its aim to promote safe and healthy eating habits across various campuses. This initiative comes under the Eat Right India movement of FSSAI and aims to encourage safe, healthy and sustainable food consumption in various workplaces and institutions, including prisons. The initiative saw the participation and certification of some of the leading prisons in India. These include major jails like Tihar Jail (Delhi), Central Jail Gaya (Bihar), Modern Central Jail (Punjab), Central Jail Rewa (Madhya Pradesh) as well as many district and divisional jails. The highest number of certified jails were from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Punjab, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

3 Tamil Nadu launched ‘Neingal Nalama’ scheme

The Government of Tamil Nadu has launched the   ‘ Neengal Nalma ‘ (Are you well?) scheme, a beneficiary outreach program  aimed at reviewing the implementation of major schemes and resolving public grievances. Under the ‘Neengal Nalma’ scheme, the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Heads of Departments, Department Secretaries and District Collectors were directly contacted to inquire from the people about the level of their benefits and identify any hindrances related to various government schemes. 4. Prestigious IAA Golden Compass Award to Srinivasan Swamy

Srinivasan Swamy  has been awarded the ‘ IAA Golden Compass Award ‘  instituted by the International Advertising Association (IAA)  in March 2024 .  Srinivasan Swamy is the Chairman and Managing Director of RK Swamy Limited. Srinivasan Swami is also known as Sundar Swami. This award is being given for the first time to an Indian industrial leader.

5 Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sutherland named ICC Players of the Month for February 2024

Young Indian opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal  has been named  the ICC Men’s Player of the Month  for February 2024  .  In  the women’s category , Australia  ‘s  Annabel Sutherland  claimed the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for February 2024.

6 Indian writer Amitav Ghosh received the prestigious Erasmus Award

Praemium Erasmianum Foundation  has   honored Indian writer Amitav Ghosh  with  the Erasmus Prize 2024 . He has received this prestigious honor for his passionate contribution on the theme “Imagining the Unimaginable”, in which he explores the unprecedented global crisis of climate change through his literary works.

7 Riken Yamamoto Wins 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize

Japanese architect  Riken Yamamoto was recently   declared the winner of the  prestigious  Pritzker Architecture Prize , often referred to as the ” Architecture Nobel “. This award is the highest international honor in this field. Yamamoto is Japan’s ninth laureate. The award was established in 1979 by J. A. Pritzker and his wife, Cindy, to honor living architects whose work demonstrates talent, vision, and commitment to humanity and the built environment. Riken Yamamoto’s architectural vision prioritizes family and community with a focus on the visible and tangible aspects of architecture.

8 Ministry of Minority Affairs approved the establishment of ‘Jain Manuscript Science Center’ (GUCJM) in Gujarat University.

Under the vision of  Development from Heritage ‘ and ‘ Enrichment from Heritage ‘, inspired by  the  ‘ Pancha Pran ‘ of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi , the  Ministry of Minority Affairs has sanctioned Rs. 40 crore for the establishment of ‘Jain Manuscript Science Center (GUCJM)  in  Gujarat University.  Have sanctioned Rs . Recognizing the importance of promoting education and research in the field of Jain studies and empowerment of minority communities through education and research, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) Scheme, has approved the study of Jainism in the University. Approved the establishment of Jain Knowledge Center for the purpose of academic support for the development of Prakrit language.

9 Google and ECI partner for information on voting processes

Google  has   partnered with the Election Commission of India (ECI)  to provide  official information on voting procedures  for  the upcoming general elections . Through Google searches and YouTube videos, voters will be able to access important information about the candidates, including how to register and vote. In separate initiatives, Google has rolled out new measures to combat misinformation and help people navigate AI-generated content during the upcoming election season. One of these measures   is Google’s collaboration with India election fact-checking  collective  Shakti .

10. Share of private banks in total deposits increased to 34%

The share of private sector banks in total deposits  has increased significantly,   reaching 34% by December 2023 , from 25% at the end of financial year 2017-18. This growth is driven by aggressive interest rate offerings and better customer relationship management strategies adopted by private banks. In contrast, the share of public sector banks in total deposits declined from 66% to 59% at the end of financial year 2017-18, according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data.

11 Launch of fifth and sixth ships ‘Agre’ and ‘Akshay’ of  ASW SWC (GRSE) project

13 International Day of Action for  Rivers 2024

International Day of Action for Rivers  is observed  annually  on 14 March . The International Day of Action for Rivers has its roots in the first international meeting of people affected by dams, held in Curitiba, Brazil in March 1997. River experts from 20 countries declared March 14 as “ Day of Action for Rivers ” with the aim of forming a coalition against the degradation of ecologically sensitive water bodies, rivers and watersheds. This year’s theme is “ Water for All ”.

14 Padmashree Kapildev Prasad passes away

Padmashri Kapil Dev Prasad, who gave recognition to  Bawan Booti  art at the international level  , passed away. Born in Basavan Bigha village, Kapildev Prasad dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the art of handloom and Bababuti sarees, the traditional weaving art passed down from his ancestors.  Kapil Dev Prasad was awarded the Padma Shri  , the country’s fourth highest civilian award, by  President Draupadi Murmu  in  April 2023 for stitching 52 identical bootis or motifs by hand on cotton or tasar cloth.
