1 President inaugurates Homeopathy Seminar on World Homeopathy Day

President  Smt. Draupadi Murmu  inaugurated   a two-day  Homeopathy Seminar organized by the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy   in   New Delhi  on the occasion of World Homeopathy Day . In his address, the President said that homeopathy has been adopted as a simple and accessible treatment method in many countries. Many institutions across the world at international, national and local levels are promoting homeopathy. The President praised the Ministry of AYUSH, Central Council for Research in Homeopathy, National Commission for Homeopathy, National Institute of Homeopathy and all such institutions of the Central Government for their contribution in promoting homeopathy in India.

2 SINE, IIT Bombay and Canara Bank partner for  startup financing

Canara Bank  and  SINEIIT Bombay  signed   an MoU to provide financial assistance to startups . Canara Bank’s Start-up Scheme will offer funding, while SINE will provide incubation support. The objective of this MoU is to provide financial support to startups, which is an important moment for the startup ecosystem.

3 Pune’s Command Hospital becomes the first government hospital in the country to successfully perform piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implant.

Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department of Command Hospital Pune (Southern Command)  has reported the case of a 7 year old child suffering from hearing loss due to severe congenital anomalies of external and middle ear  and deafness of one ear (SSD).  It has become the first government hospital in the country to procure and successfully implant  two Piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implants (BCIs) in an  adult  patient suffering from TB  .

4 GUJCOST designated as nodal center for ISRO’s START program

The Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST)  has   been appointed as the nodal center for  ISRO  ‘s  START programme  , which aims to promote aspiring scientists and engineers in the field of space science and technology. Conceived by ISRO, this program provides an introductory online platform covering various areas of space science research. Under the START programme, GUJCOST will host live classes, serving as a central hub for knowledge dissemination. Additionally, four Regional Science Centers located at Rajkot, Patan, Bhavnagar and Bhuj will play a key role in coordinating and facilitating the programme, thereby increasing its reach across the region.

5 Simon Harris becomes the youngest Prime Minister of Ireland

 Simon Harris,  37  , has been elected as Ireland’s youngest-ever Prime Minister  , replacing Leo Varadkar who resigned last month. Before him, Indian-origin Prime Minister Leo Varadkar was the youngest Prime Minister of Ireland. Leo Varadkar became Prime Minister in 2017 at the age of 38.

India   opened its first post office  in  South Gangotri, Antarctica in 1984  . Within a year, more than 10,000 letters and mails were posted at the post office.  In 1988–89, South Gangotri sank into ice and was subsequently closed . On  January 26, 1990, another branch was opened at Maitri Research Station  in  Antarctica  . Letters addressed to the post office in Antarctica  are forwarded to the National Center for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR)  in Goa, which is the nodal agency for India’s polar expeditions. A researcher carrying a consignment of letters during scientific expeditions to the continent. At the Research Centre, the letters are ‘canceled’ with the “Friendship North Goa” stamp imprint, which has become a well-known “collector’s item” among philatelists and hobbyists. The term ‘cancellation’ is a mark applied to a stamp or postal stationery rendering it unfit for re-use, and indicating the place and date of the original post office. After almost 40 years, the postal department is opening a second branch of the post office and assigning it a new pin code MH-1718.

7 More than 3.4 crore Indians infected with hepatitis infection: WHO

According to  the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Hepatitis Report 2024  released on  9 April 2024  , India  is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of viral hepatitis disease. According to the report, around 2.9 crore Indians were infected with Hepatitis B while 0.55 crore Indians were infected with Hepatitis C. WHO released this report during the World Hepatitis Summit held in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal from 9 to 11 April 2024. WHO has set a target of eliminating hepatitis worldwide by 2030. According to WHO, the goal of eliminating hepatitis by 2030 can be achieved through better awareness, vaccination and health care.

8 Hockey India announces inauguration of National Women’s Hockey League 2024-25

Hockey India unveiled  a new initiative,  the National Women’s Hockey League 2024-25  , which is the first domestic hockey league for women in India. The tournament will be divided into two phases, with the inaugural phase   scheduled from April 30 to May 9 in Ranchi, Jharkhand . All matches during this phase will be held at the Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Marang Gomke which recently hosted the FIH Olympic Qualifiers and the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy.

9 Sri Lankan star Kamindu Mendis and England’s Maia Boucher crowned ICC Player of the Month

The International Cricket Council (ICC)  has  named Sri Lankan cricketer Kamindu Mendis  as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for March 2024. On the women’s side,  England’s Maia Bouchier  has been awarded the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for March 2024.

10 Novak Djokovic becomes the oldest No. 1 player by breaking Federer’s record

Serbia  ‘s  Novak Djokovic  has   broken  Swiss tennis legend  Roger Federer ‘s record of becoming  the oldest man to be ranked No. 1  in the ATP Tour  ‘s  computerized rankings . At the age of 36 years and 321 days, Novak Djokovic overtook Federer’s record as the oldest No. 1 ranked male tennis player. India’s Rohan Bopanna became the oldest men’s doubles No. 1 ranked player last year at the age of 43. This year, at the age of 44, she regained the No. 1 rank in doubles.

11 World Homeopathy Day 2024

Every year  10 April  is   celebrated as World Homeopathy Day . This day   is also known as the birth anniversary of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy. Today, people all over the world are trusting homeopathy medicines and getting their health related problems treated through it. The theme for the year 2024 is – “ Homeoparivar: One Health, One Family ”.

12 Higgs-Boson discoverer and Nobel Prize winner Peter Higgs dies at the age of 94

British physicist Peter Higgs  died at the age of 94. Peter Higgs  played an important role in the discovery of ‘Higgs-Boson Particle ‘ i.e. ‘ God Particle ‘. ‘God Particle’ helped in explaining how the universe was formed after the Big Bang event. Peter Higgs showed how bosons hold the universe together. Peter Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2013 for this discovery.
