1.Centre plans nationwide celebrations of birth centenary of Satyajit Ray:-

The Government is planning nationwide celebrations of birth centenary of noted filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

Talking to newsmen in Kolkata on Friday, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare said that year-long programmes are being planned to celebrate the world-famed filmmaker at all important cities and towns of the country which includes a screening of his films and exhibitions on Ray’s paintings and writings which falls in the year 2021.

Earlier Mr Khare visited the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata and took stock of the activities there.

2.Texas India Forum to host community summit in honour of visiting PM Modi on Sep 22:-

Houston-based Texas India Forum will host a community summit in honour of visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the NRG Stadium on September 22.

The event will be organised by the Texas India Forum, a not-for-profit organisation. The mega event billed as “Howdy, Modi!”,  is expected to be attended by 50,000 people.

It will include a cultural programme and an address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The tagline for the summit is “Shared Dreams, Bright Futures”. This will be Mr Modi’s first visit to Houston as the Prime Minister of India.

Over 650 community organisations have already signed up to be “welcome partners” for the programme. Organisers have extended the deadline for welcome partners to sign up until Saturday and they will receive exclusive early access to free passes for their members.

3.Iran test-launched mid-range ballistic missile: US officials:-

US officials said today that Iran test-launched a mid-range ballistic missile earlier this week in defiance of the Trump administration, which has warned the country to curb its missile program.

The test-launch was said to have taken place completely within Iran’s borders and did not pose a threat to American shipping or military bases.

The test came amid heightened tensions between Iran and the West, mainly regarding the safety of commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

The White House said in a brief statement that it was aware of reports of a projectile launched in Iran but officials declined to comment further.

Tensions have mounted with Iran over a 2015 nuclear accord it reached with world powers. The deal eased sanctions in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program.

4.Karnataka: Monument erected in memory of Kargil war martyrs in Dharwad:-

Uttara Karnataka Sainik Kalyana Samiti and patriotic citizens of Dharwad have erected a monument in Dharwad in the memory of martyrs of Kargil war.

Every year on July 26th ex-servicemen, NCC, Scouts and Guides gather here to pay respects to the martyrs of Kargil war. The pride in the Indian army and their brave actions are narrated for the younger generation on this occasion.

Brigadier Bhagawat in Dharwad shares information on the memorial named as Kargil Stupa that carries the names of 13 martyrs of the war from Karnataka.

He said that 26th July is a memorable day not only for Indian soldiers but for the entire population. Because on this day the proud Indian army dislodged Pakistani troops from the heights of Tiger hills located in Kargil in J&K state.

5.Kapil Dev led CAC to pick Team India’s next head coach:-

A Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) led by World Cup-winning former captain Kapil Dev today entrusted with the responsibility of selecting India’s new coach.

The interviews for the coaches are expected to be conducted in the middle of next month. The decision was taken by the Committee of Administrators (COA) running Indian Cricket after a meeting in New Delhi.

Apart from Kapil, the panel, which picked the women’s coach in December last year, comprises former women’s captain Shantha Rangaswamy and former men’s coach Anshuman Gaekwad.

India’s incumbent coach Ravi Shastri has been handed an extension till the end of the tour of West Indies from 3rd of next month to 3rd September.

The COA is, however, still awaiting Supreme Court directions on the conflict of interest case involving the original CAC members Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman.

The two have been asked to choose one out of the multiple cricketing roles they are performing at the moment, including commentary.
