1.BCCI invites applications for head coach post :-
(I)The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday invited applications for the head coach post. This means the present head coach, Anil Kumble, will not get an automatic extension after his current term expires at the end of the Champions Trophy.
(II)Those interested can apply by May 31and will be interviewed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.
2.Higher refining margins push up IOC net by 85% to Rs 3,721 crore in Q4 :-
(I)Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has reported an 85 per cent jump in net profit for the March 2017 quarter on the back of higher refining margins. The oil major reported a net profit of Rs 3,721 crore in the January-March 2017 quarter compared to Rs 2,006 crore during the same period last year.
(II)“We took special efforts at different levels during refining and that has helped us save more than Rs 1,000 crore,” said B Ashok, chairman, IOC.
3.‘Gau rakshaks’ create mayhem at Bhubaneswar railway station :-
(I)A group of self-proclaimed ‘gau rakshaks’ created mayhem at the Bhubaneswar railway station on Wednesday, attacking two persons who were legally transporting 20 milch cows. No arrests have been made so far.
(II)The attack took place around 9.30 a.m. when a Noida-based dairy farm was transporting 20 milch cows from Salem in Tamil Nadu to Meghalaya in two parcel vans of the Kochuveli-Guwahati Express. The dairy employees had all the legal documents with them.
4.Ultras back in Srinagar for recruitment :-
(I)Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, which the police have described as a militancy-free zone for more than a decade, is apparently witnessing a fresh recruitment of locals as the gun-totting image of an 18-year-old Srinagar boy has gone viral on social media in the past 24 hours.
(II)Wearing army fatigues, pictures of Tufail Ahmad Mir, a resident of Srinagar’s Qamarwari area, apparently circulated by the Hizbul Mujahideen, have taken the security agencies by surprise.
5.Advani, Joshi called to court :-
(I)A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here on Thursday summoned senior BJP leaders L.K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti to appear before it in the Babri Masjid demolition case.
(II)The court directed the leaders to appear before it in person on May 30.
(III)”The date is fixed for the framing of charges,” Vimal Srivastava, lawyer for the accused, said.
6.MCI nod for Pudukottai Medical College :-
(I)The Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued a Letter of Permission (LoP) to admit 150 students in the new Pudukottai Government Medical College for 2017-18.
(II)The MCI team that inspected the newly constructed college recently was said to have been pleased with the facilities created for in-patients, out-patients, doctors, para-medical staff members, laboratories, class rooms, lecture halls and residential and residence quarters. The college will have a 700-bed hospital.
7.Sikkim mountaineer summits Mt Everest :-
(I)A mountaineer from Sikkim Kelsang (I)Dorjee Bhutia (36) has successfully summited Mount Everest without oxygen on May 21.
(II)He had reached the Everest base camp as part of army team on May 17 and camp 4 on May 19 but began the summit on May 20 due to bad weather, general secretary Sikkim Mountaineering Association(SMA) Barap Namgyal Bhutia told PTI today.
(III)Kelsang had to spend the entire night and day of May 19 and May 20 at South Col also called ‘death zone’ due to the weather and began his climb at 8 pm on May 20.
8.GOP candidate charged with assaulting reporter :-
(I)The Republican candidate in the nationally watched election on Thursday for Montana’s sole congressional seat has been charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly grabbing a reporter by the neck and throwing him to the ground.
(II)Voters decide in the special election whether Republican Greg Gianforte or Democrat Rob Quist will fill the U.S. House seat left vacant when Ryan Zinke resigned to join President Donald Trump’s Cabinet.
9.Trump travel ban blocked, fight headed for Supreme Court :-
(I)President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban “speaks with vague words of national security, but in context drips with religious intolerance, animus and discrimination,” a federal appeals court has in ruling against the executive order targeting six Muslim-majority countries.
(II)Trump’s administration vowed to take the fight to the US Supreme Court.
10.In-flight Wi-Fi Net access soon :-
(I)On-board Wi-Fi may soon become a reality as the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sent a revised proposal that will enable in-flight access to voice, data and video services.
(II)“The DoT has sent a revised proposal for the consideration of the Committee of Secretaries (home, communication and civil aviation ministries) after re-examining its earlier proposal related to interception by security agencies when required,” Civil Aviation Secretary R.N. Choubey said. “The proposal will be taken up at the next meeting of the Secretaries.”
